Is religion being equated with fundamentalism in common parlance? I don't think so. Most people are religious, and most are not fundamentalist (most aren't even "right wing"). Christianity is too common and heterogenous in this country for it to be widely equated with its fundamentalist adherents, but Islam has certainly faced that problem.
