Welcome to you all on the longest night of the year. The last few months have been a falling away, a frantic rush to get everything in before The End; and now the end is here, and it's not so bad. The night has fallen, and from here out the light gets a little stronger, a little more every day.

In the same way that at the height of summer, we have the slight melancholy feeling that the days are getting shorter imperceptibly, now in the middle of winter there is a tiny bit of hope. The next few months will be cold and bitter, with snow and sleet and assorted icy mess falling, and long dark times where it seems nothing will ever grow again.

But it will, and that is the promise of solstice. Those of you who celebrate Christmas also know the power of the promise--that things may be dark now, but here is a new light and a promise of the new day. Those who celebrate Hanukkah know the story of light, that seemed impossibly small, growing night by night. (Those of you who celebrate Festivus, meet me out back for some airing of grievances.)

With the solstice, and the turn from shrinking days to diminishing nights, we can finally rest. The turning point has been reached, and we can now sleep and hibernate through the next few months, secure that the light is here, and is growing stronger.

Joy and love to you all, and may your rest renew you. Peace on earth, good will toward men, and may She bless us, every one.

I've been fumbling my way through a comment for the past five minutes here. I think what I'm really trying to get at, though, is "I needed to read that. Thank you."

"I've got some problems with you people - and you're all gonna hear about them!"

I'm so getting a pole for my next place.

Wow.

That was very beautiful. It occurs to me rather forcefully that I haven't seen you in a very long time. I hope we can remedy that in the new year.
in the meantime, Go Sun!

There are also blessings amongst the swift nights and long days, where the sun is hotter than blood, colder than love.

Merry Endweek, Em.
