These were taken from my "Absence of Monkey" cd and from my "sleepy on a saturday morning" mix, both of which soothe my soul greatly. Most of them were guessed!
1. You might get what you're after...(bonus points for guessing which version)
Burning Down the House, originally by Talking Heads. The version I'm fond of is Tom Jones.
2. Many shapes and weights to choose from; I will never leave my bedroom!
Coin-Operated Boy by the Dresden Dolls.
3. Miss you all the time, I must face; miss your touch and your embrace.
Renaissance Affair by Hooverphonic.
sen_no_ongaku wrote a piece based on this, and his version tends to supplant the original in my head. Something about the rising strings at the end...
4. For a million years he has been your lover.
XTC's Green Man!
5. You don't wanna hear a thing about what he should but doesn't think about when you wanted him without a doubt.
Ski, by Alison Moyet. Her voice is like velvet. Stealthmuffin, I need to find a copy of your Hoodoo album. Not surprised that nobody got this one, since the line is convoluted and it's not a very well-known song.
6. It's more fun to compute! (again, bonus points)
Homecomputer, originally by Krafftwerk; but as
kassrachel pointed out, Senor Coconut has a Latin samba cover. Oooh so good!
7. Seven girls are going to the graveyard, and only six of them are coming back.
St. James Infirmary, by Snakefarm. Have they ever put out any albums besides "Songs From My Funeral"?
8. She says Little Regis is just plain egregious and Captain Picard is too droll.
She Made Me Name You Earl, by the Bobs. This is also the reason that
wavyarms's bike is named Earl. Though it doesn't resemble Captain Picard as much...
9. And not one word can fill my bed.
I'll Never Go A-Roving Again, by Rinde Eckert. It sounds like it should be an arrangement of an old, old song...but it's all his, all new, and the sorrow and anger with which this line is delivered touches me deeply. I must expose more of you to his music.
10. You will find me at the banks of all four rivers.
The Garden, by Einsturzende Neubaten.
11. The drinks are free, but you really must stay.
Midnight Cabaret, by Reverend Glasseye and His Wooden Legs. Aside from one of the coolest band names ever, the Reverend wins points for resembling a distillation of the demented polka side of Tom Waits.
12. Do they wear pants? No! But they wish they did, that's how smart they are!
The Pants Song! MST3K, in which we learn just what's so wonderful about that garment.
13. If I had three lives, I'd marry her in two.
Melbourne, by The Whitlams. An Australian band whose albums are so tightly tied to my memory that I don't think I'll ever forget them.
14. when I'm floating in through a tunnel I close my eyes.
green grass of tunnel, by mum. I think I got the words correct.
15. His little heart, it beat so fast--and I'm ashamed of running away
Hounds of Love, by Kate Bush. Besides being a cool song, it inspired one of the features of my game, and I just want to sprint when I hear it.
16. Ho de ho de ho, sir.
Minnie the Moocher. Minnie the Moocher as performed by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie as Jeeves and Wooster. "I say, Jeeves, proper feudal spirit and all that, but you can leave off the 'sir' for this."
17. I'll take on any man here who says that's not the way it should be.
Protection, by Massive Attack.
18. I can shine even in the darkness, but I crave the light that he brings.
Gabriel, by Lamb. Perhaps my favorite love song.
19. The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had.
Mad World. The Gary Adams cover that I have is gaining popularity through a really roundabout route. You see, it's the main theme from Donnie Darko, an excellent film which had its release about three years ago, then rereleased a few months ago. It seems to be gathering a following, and the song, I presume, is resurging from that.
20. What I worshiped stole my love away.
The Ground Beneath her Feet, by U2. Originally from the Salman Rushdie novel of the same name.
Wow. All in all, about half were guessed! Pretty cool...now I must find more music...
